A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- February 2017

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale by fogisbeautiful

  • Miles Walked This Month (January 25th-February 26th):  64.5 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  810.2 miles
  • Milestones Reached: The Enchanted River

“This was their state when one day they found their path blocked by a running water. It flowed fast and strong but not very wide right across the way, and it was black, or looked it in the gloom. (…) There had been a bridge of wood across, but it had rotted and fallen leaving only the broken posts near the bank.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 8: Flies and Spiders

I swore that I would not spend one more god forsaken month on that same Mirkwood path, and by god, I made it! I didn’t think I was going to, but I did! Take that! I mean, I’m still technically in Mirkwood, but at least I’m making progress! I’ll be kidnapped by Thranduil shortly (and I never thought I would type something like that with a hopeful attitude…) and then I’ll finally escape this awful place.

Onward! And don’t mind the hart…

…I’m sure it wouldn’t make for very good eating anyway. ;P

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- January 2017

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale by fogisbeautiful

  • Miles Walked This Month (December 29th-January 25th):  48.9 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  745.7 miles
  • Milestones Reached: none (78.7 miles into Mirkwood, halfway to the Enchanted River)

“It was not long before they grew to hate the forest as heartily as they had hated the tunnels of the goblins, and it seemed to offer even less hope of any ending. But they had to go on and on, long after they were sick for a sight of the sun, and of the sky, and longed for the feel of wind on their faces. There was no movement of air down under the forest-roof, and it was everlastingly still and dark and stuffy.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 8: Flies and Spiders

Oh I had such plans for this year… and then Mirkwood sucked the life out of me.

As I mentioned at the end of 2016, I had planned to start integrating walking into my writing routine through dictation this month. What I didn’t consider when I made this decision, was Daylight Savings Time. In my part of the world, its getting dark around 6 pm, and I don’t even get off work until 5:30. So I haven’t been able to take my writing “on the road” as it were, and have therefore lost all motivation for walking more. I’m attempting to come up with alternatives now, but so far, nothing. We’ll see how it goes next month I guess. Hopefully I can at least get to the Enchanted River…

Until next time!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- The Conclusion of 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (November 29th-December 28th):  58 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  696.8 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Mirkwood (Forest Trail entrance)

“By the afternoon they had reached the eaves of Mirkwood, and were resting almost beneath the great overhanging boughs of its outer trees. Their trunks were huge and gnarled, their branches twisted, their leaves were dark and long. Ivy grew on them and trailed along the ground.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 7: Queer Lodgings

the_elven_gate

We have come to Mirkwood, and the end of 2016! It’s been a great journey so far, and I anticipate the rest of the journey will be even more exciting! Just for fun, here are a few stats I’ve pulled together from the year:

  • Most miles walked in one month- 83.7 (August)
  • Least miles walked in one month- 44.2 (September)
  • Average miles walked per month- 62.3
  • Miles remaining to The Lonely Mountain- 245.2
  • Miles remaining to return home- 1058.2
  • Estimated return date- June 2018

I’m really looking forward to 2017, because I have a plan to incorporate walking into my writing routine by using dictation! That should up my mileage by quite a bit, if I can commit to it. As a goal, I’m hoping to raise my average miles per month to 70 (which will shave about two months off my journey!).

Until next month (and next year)!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- November 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (October 25th-November 28th): 65.3 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  638.8 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Carrock, Beorn’s House

“‘And why is it called the Carrock?’ asked Bilbo as he went along at the wizard’s side.

‘He called it the Carrock, because carrock is his word for it. He calls things like that carrocks, and this one is the Carrock because it is the only one near his home, and he knows it well.'” ~(Gandalf, being super helpful, as usual…)

“Standing near was a huge man with a thick black beard and hair, and great bare arms and legs with knotted muscles. He was clothed in a tunic of wool down to his knees, and was leaning on a large axe.

‘Ugh! Here they are!’ he said to the horses, “They don’t look dangerous. You can be off!” He laughed a great rolling laugh, put down his axe and came forward.

‘Who are you and what do you want?’”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 7: Queer Lodgings

Despite that gruff greeting, we’ve had a nice rest at Beorn’s house and we are now well on our way to Mirkwood! I don’t have high hopes of many miles walked this month, what with the holidays and everything, but I do hope to have a better system in place next year, incorporating my writing into my walking (or at least my brainstorming ;P). Look for more info on that in the coming weeks!

Until next time!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- October 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (September 27th-October 25th): 55.5 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  573.5 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Warg Attack, the Eyrie

“All of a sudden they heard a howl away down hill, a long shuddering howl. It was answered by another away to the right and a good deal nearer to them; then by another not far away to the left. It was wolves howling at the moon, wolves gathering together!”

“Over them swooped the eagles; the dark rush of their beating wings smote them to the floor or drove them far away; their talons tore at goblin faces. Other birds flew to the tree-tops and seized the dwarves, who were scrambling up now as far as ever they dared to go.”

“Very soon Bilbo was laid down, trembling with fear, on a wide shelf of rock on the mountain-side. There was no path down on to it save by flying; and no path down off it except by jumping over a precipice.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 6: Out of the Frying-Pan, Into the Fire

We are nearly halfway to the Carrock!

As someone with a fear of heights, I’ll be quite happy when my feet are planted back on solid ground 🙂 Until next time!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- September 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (August 31st-September 26th): 44.2 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  518 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Goblin Attack, Gollum’s Lake, Dwarf Reunion

“‘Who are these miserable persons?’ said the Great Goblin.

“‘Dwarves, and this!’ said one of the drivers, pulling at Bilbo’s chain so that he fell forward onto his knees, ‘We found them sheltering in our Front Porch.'”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 4: Over Hill and Under Hill

“Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum – as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 5: Riddles in the Dark

“‘And here’s the burglar!’ said Bilbo stepping down into the middle of them, and slipping off the ring.

“Bless me, how they jumped! Then they shouted with surprise and delight.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 6: Out of the Frying-Pan, Into the Fire

Oh my gosh, this was the worst month I’ve had so far… which is actually strangely appropriate, considering that’s probably exactly how Bilbo felt during this particular part of his journey ;P

tumblr_md0zlxj4zx1re3c2eo1_500

You know, between goblins, and Gollum, and things are probably going to get worse before they get better ;P Hopefully we can get away from the wargs quickly and the Eagles can get us to the Eyrie at least before the next month is up!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- August 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (July 26th-August 30th):  83.7 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  473.8 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Rivendell, Thunder Battle

“And so at last they all came to the Last Homely House, and found it’s doors flung wide […] His [Elrond’s] house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 3: A Short Rest

“All was well, until one day they met a thunderstorm – more than a thunderstorm, a thunder-battle […] Bilbo had never seen or imagined anything of the kind […] When he peeped out in the lightning-flashes, he saw that across the valley the stone-giants were out and were hurling rocks at one another for a game, and catching them, and tossing them down into the darkness where they smashed among the trees far below, or splintered into little bits with a bang. “

~The Hobbit, Chapter 4: Over Hill and Under Hill

Well, I reached Rivendell, but I didn’t get much rest. I had my best month so far in August! And like Bilbo, I spent a great deal of it climbing around in the mountains:

But I also spent some time in the air as well:

My Colorado vacation got me all the way through the Thunder-Battle, and well on my way to the goblin’s Front Porch! We should be through Gollum’s Lake (plus One ;P) and reunited with our beloved dwarves before September is done! We are a fourth of the way through our adventure, guys! It’s exciting!

See you next time!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- July 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (June 30th-July 25th):  55.5 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  390.1 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Trollshaws, Ford of Bruinen

“For just at that moment the light came over the hill, and there was a mighty twitter in the branches. William never spoke for he turned to stone as he stooped; and Bert and Tom were stuck like rocks as they looked at him. And there they stand to this day, all alone, unless the birds perch on them…”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 2: Roast Mutton

“One morning they forded a river at a wide shallow place full of the noise of stones and foam. The far bank was steep and slippery. When they got to the top of it, leading their ponies, they saw that the great mountains had marched down very near to them.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 3: A Short Rest

Well, it wasn’t the worst month I’ve ever had, but it was a near thing. I did, however, manage to walk more than I did last month, which was the goal! We survived Trollshaws (without being squashed to jelly!):

trollshaws

We’ve nearly made it to Rivendell, but not quite, we’re just on the other side of the Ford of Bruinen:

4e6fe43f6e813_241_lotrford-of-bruinen2

Next month, we’ll meet Lord Elrond and begin our perilous journey into the Misty Mountains, if all goes well!

On a blogging note, you may have noticed that I missed last week’s blog post. This was due to a combination of Camp NaNoWriMo, and the fact that I’m considering switching that particular post to something else. I didn’t have time to get it ready this month, but stay tuned next month for something new and exciting!

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- June 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (June 1st-June 29th):  54.6 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  334.6 miles
  • Milestones Reached:  The Last Bridge

“I don’t know what river it was, a rushing red one, swollen with the rains of the last few days, that came down from the hills and mountains in front of them.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 2: Roast Mutton

Well, it was a slog this month, but I finally made it out of the Lone Lands and across the Last Bridge!

l1080554

I walked the least amount in a month that I have since I started this journey and next month isn’t promising to be a big walking month either, what with Camp NaNo and all. But my goal is to at least walk more than I did this month, because this is pathetic! With that in mind, I should see you all at the Ford of Bruinen! 🙂

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- May 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (Apr 26th-May 31st):  80.8 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:  280 miles
  • Milestones Reached:  Traveling the Lone Lands to the Last Bridge

“Everything seemed gloomy, for the weather that day had taken a nasty turn. Mostly it had been as good as May can be, even in merry tales, but now it was cold and wet.”

~The Hobbit, Chapter 2: Roast Mutton

Ugh, that’s a nasty description isn’t it? Kind of like the weather today, actually. But I walked the farthest in one month that I have yet, so I just can’t quite feel as gloomy as Bilbo and the dwarves right now 🙂 I only have 45 miles to the Last Bridge and then things will start to get exciting!

But for now, here we are…

thelonelandsbannergleams

 Better just keep trekking 😉
