Once More Unto The (Writing) Breach- November 2016

What I’ve Accomplished This Month

NovWordKeeper.png

  • The Stars Are Fire– 53,602 words written

The first draft of The Stars Are Fire is complete! šŸ˜€ It needs a lot of research and a lot of editing before it’s ready for its debut, but this is the first year I have ever written ā€œThe Endā€ on a novel that I started in November. I’m super proud of that accomplishment and it makes me feel incredibly optimistic about the upcoming year! I’ve already got my plan lined out and right now I’m looking at a tentative publication date sometime in September! That’ll be pushing it, honestly, but if I’ve gotten it published by this time next year, I’ll be very happy šŸ˜€

What’s Coming Up in December

giphy.gif

…I mean, basically šŸ™‚ This time of year is usually the most stressful time of year for me, so I try not to compound that with strenuous goals. I’m letting TSAF rest until January, and the most stressful thing I have on my calendar is trying to get back into posting Double The Baggins, Twice The Took, but even that I’m not worrying about too much. If I get one chapter out, I’ll honestly be pretty happy šŸ™‚ I also have the end of the year blog post to write, which is a monster, and I’m helping my friend, Sarah with some editing, so I won’t be slacking, I can assure you.

And now, the cute animal of the month!

kinkajou.jpg

This awesome dude is a kinkajou (also called a honey bear)!

He is a rainforest mammal and he is about the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long while.

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale- November 2016

A Hobbit’s Walking Tale (Twitter tags: #AHobbitsWalkingTale #byfogisbeautiful)

  • Miles Walked This Month (October 25th-November 28th): 65.3 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:Ā Ā 638.8 miles
  • Milestones Reached:Ā Carrock, Beorn’s House

“‘And why is it called the Carrock?’ asked Bilbo as he went along at the wizard’s side.

‘He called it the Carrock, because carrock is his word for it. He calls things like that carrocks, and this one is the Carrock because it is the only one near his home, and he knows it well.'” ~(Gandalf, being super helpful, as usual…)

ā€œStanding near was a huge man with a thick black beard and hair, and great bare arms and legs with knotted muscles. He was clothed in a tunic of wool down to his knees, and was leaning on a large axe.

ā€˜Ugh! Here they are!’ he said to the horses, ā€œThey don’t look dangerous. You can be off!ā€ He laughed a great rolling laugh, put down his axe and came forward.

ā€˜Who are you and what do you want?ā€™ā€

~The Hobbit, Chapter 7: Queer Lodgings

Despite that gruff greeting, we’ve had a nice rest at Beorn’s house and we are now well on our way to Mirkwood! I don’t have high hopes of many miles walked this month, what with the holidays and everything, but I do hope to have a better system in place next year, incorporating my writing into my walking (or at least my brainstorming ;P). Look for more info on that in the coming weeks!

Until next time!

A Peek Behind The Curtain- November 2016

So, this post is sort of becoming a “When I have something” post, instead of a regular occurrence. That’s okay, it’s NaNoWriMo, which means I have something to report!

The novel I’m working on this year is best described as “Genderbent Hamlet in Space”. It’s been an interesting book to write so far, mostly because it’s the most outlined novel I’ve ever written. I’ve discovered that there are a lot of pros and a few cons to this, but I’ve been able to slog my way through it with dogged determination.

It’s actually a bit difficult to pick a scene to share with you all, but I think I’ve finally decided on this one from Act I, Scene ii: the wedding celebration of King Clarence and Queen Judith. The only character that doesn’t get at least a brief introduction is Hortensia, so you’ll have to wait to meet her šŸ™‚

This is completely unedited, so I’m sure it’s awful, but here’s a Peek Behind The Curtain of NaNoWriMo!

The Stars Are Fire- NaNoWriMo 2016

The king (the word tasted stale on the back of her tongue and she took another swallow from her glass) was speaking to a pair of well dressed men, smiling at them pleasantly enough but she could see her uncle’s jaw flexing beneath his pale skin. It was a common tell that meant something was upsetting him. And whatever that was, Henley felt she wanted to be a part of it, she moved a bit closer and touched a string of gems that was nestled around the crest of her ear. The sound amplified and she could hear what was being said without looking particularly interested. She crossed her arms over the tasteful and unadorned bodice of her black gown and sipped at her drink.

ā€œā€¦miner’s guild is becoming increasingly concerned, my lord,ā€ one of the simpering little weasels whined in her ear, ā€œThis business with the Lady Fortuna is getting… unreasonable.ā€

ā€œThey’re pirates, my lord,ā€ his equally disgusting partner said, ā€œHighwaymen. No matter their captain, no matter their position, they are still thieves! And they are harassing our shipping lanes with undue prejudice!ā€

ā€œGentlemen,ā€ the king said, in his soft voice that used to soothe Henley and now only grated on her ear, ā€œDo not misunderstand me. I understand that the problem must be dealt with. But we must address these things through the proper channels. No,ā€ Henley could almost hear him raising his hand in a conciliatory gesture, though she had her back to him and she bit her cheek in an effort not to roll her eyes, ā€œNo, I hear what you are saying, Basil, but if you think the boy’s position is of no matter or consequence than you are more naive than I thought. We must speak to the Chancellor of Njor before we take any further action. I will not run hot-headed into this situation likeā€¦ā€

…like my brother Henley…

ā€œā€¦like we have done before,ā€ he finished prudently (cowardly Henley thought in the darkest corner of her mind, but threw back the last of her champagne to stifle it), ā€œWe must be firm, but we must also be diplomatic. That is the only way to get the inner worlds to take us seriously, to see us as more than just a fueling station. I will write up a letter to the Chancellor in the morning and send you off with your complaints as soon as transport can be acquired and your protection assured, if that is…?ā€

ā€œYour most gracious majesty!ā€

Henley winced and touched the gems in her ear, cancelling the audio enhancement to prevent feedback. Lady Persephone did not require any enhancement to be heard. Henley suspected that her high-pitched, fawning voice was on a different wavelength from most mammalian species. Henley could not help but turn toward that voice though, as much as it irked her. For if Lady Persephone had made an appearance it was likely that her children were not too far behind. And Henley never could resist Laersa’s pull.

The trio of red-headed nobles were standing in an almost pyramidic stance before the current royal couple (not new, neither of them were new to this, though everyone was acting as if they’d never seen Henley’s mother in a crown before), Lady Persephone at the head, giggling and twittering and flipping her luxuriously dark red curls back and forth over her pale neck, her two children standing at either of her shoulders, both with hair as red as their mother’s and looking like they were both trying desperately not to look uncomfortable. Henley caught the bright green eye of Ophestes, the younger of the two, and gave him a quick, but sympathetic smile. He smiled back, but it tensed up his round face and Henley could see his fingers bunching at his sides. Fez didn’t so well with… well, people. He was a sweet boy (and despite his seventeen years, he was most definitely still a boy), but he would much prefer it if no one knew that he existed, even the few people that he liked. He didn’t do well in social situations and his mother was a walking, talking social situation, everywhere she went.

Henley’s eyes drifted to the woman standing on the other side of Fez, never quite making eye contact, not daring, not here, it wasn’t safe, but still her gaze was drawn to her. Laersa stood straight and prim, her hands clasped behind her in a crisp parade rest sort of stance, her long, wispy strands of hair tied back in a long tail that hung down her lithe back. Her green and silver uniform looked good on her, clung in all the right places, but not enough to take away from the stiff regulation that came with Academy Officers’ training. Her eyes never left the face of the king as her mother droned on, but Henley still felt as if she could see her, just out of the corner of her eye, watching Henley watching her…

ā€œWell, you know my Laersa, she is so used to getting her wayā€¦ā€

Henley’s attention went shrieking back to Lady Persephone. The Academy was the only thing Laersa had ever set her mind to in her life that she had gotten her way with her mother, and that was only because the silly bitch had somehow convinced herself that her daughter would come home in six months on the arm of a military man, possibly already married and expecting her first child. Henley regretted that her glass was already empty, and snagged another from the closest hover-butler.

ā€œā€¦but she really would like to be heading back to school as soon as possible,ā€ Lady Persephone said, tossing her hair again while Henley choked on her fresh champagne, ā€œExams are on the horizon and there is so much studying involved, all those books, and lectures, and thingsā€¦ā€

The woman twirled a bejeweled hand absently and Henley jerked her eyes back to Laersa. Back to Academy? Already? But… they hadn’t even… she hadn’t been able to… Laersa’s sharp green gaze left its trained spot in the middle distance, just briefly, but in that glance Henley read all that she needed to. This wasn’t Laersa’s idea. Persephone was behind this, the way she was behind everything, with her social climbing machinations, and arrogant assumptions. Henley clenched her glass so tightly that she could feel her fingers cramping and forced them to relax, taking another gulp. Her eyes were burning and she tried to relax her jaw the way she’d relaxed her fingers. It wasn’t safe. They were never safe. She hated it.

So, there you go šŸ™‚ I’m trying not to stress too much about whether it sucks or not before the first draft (and second… and probably third ;P) is finished šŸ™‚ I hope you enjoyed it!

Have You Hugged A Book Today?- October 2016

readingchallengeoct16

Eep! I’m down to only a single book lead! Well, I guess that’s what happens when NaNoWriMo takes over your life šŸ™‚ I’ll catch up in December, I’m sure.

Also, this is going to be a pretty unusual Reading post because I literally finished only one book this month. As a result, that book is going to be the highlight of the post, as is well deserved because it was AH-MAZ-ING. I gushed about it all over Goodreads, so here you go!

Fog’s Book Of The Month
FangirlFangirl by Rainbow Rowell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I already feel like I need to reread this book, just so I can better appreciate the ending. Or rather, the non-ending. Because it wasn’t what I expected at all. Without spoiling anything, things are not resolved. At least, not in the traditional sense that you would expect things to be resolved in a book like this. What I love most about Cath’s story, is that she doesn’t “overcome”. She triumphs, I’m not saying that. But she doesn’t magically become “better” or “get over” her issues. Instead she manages to find and surround herself with people who care about her exactly as she is, who lift her up and give her the support she needs, without changing who she is as a person.
God, this was such a great story. I was so angry at Wren (I still am, honestly, she was a grade A bitch), but in the end, I think I even got her. I got that she was going through the same things as Cath, she just handled them so much differently, in a way that maybe I can’t relate to, but that I can sympathize with. But Cath was, without a doubt, the character I related to the most strongly. It was literally like Rainbow Rowell crawled up into my headspace and just wrote down everything she found there. I don’t understand how it has taken so long for someone to write a book like this.
I can’t even begin to talk about the rest of the supporting cast, because they were too good for words. I don’t want to spoil anything, but they are all just so, so good. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Once More Unto The (Writing) Breach- October 2016

Hey guys! I am so deep into NaNoWriMo that I completely forgot about the blog! Sorry! Here goes šŸ™‚

What I’ve Accomplished This Month

octwordkeeper

You know, this is really weird. I’ve been so focused on preparing for NaNo, I forgot I was going to have one more update post with Changing History on it. Wow. All my feels are reemerging. If you haven’t already, you can read about my feels in my blog post here.

Now I miss Boromir 😦

boromirsmile

I did way more work on this story than I anticipated this month. I looked over what I had coming up and realized… I really hated the way the chapters were structured. Really hated it. So I took the last chapter I’d written and completely redid it, changing the way everything was split and making me much happier šŸ™‚ But it was a lot of work. Way more work than I wanted it to be. And now we’re at Beorn’s house and nearly everything I have has to be restructured and rewritten because it doesn’t make any sense. It’s going to be a disaster. But a disaster that can wait until after NaNo šŸ™‚ Speaking of which!

I finished an actual outline! Like, with structure and thought put into it! Actually, what I did was take an outline of Hamlet from the internet, put it side-by-side with a blank document, and work my outline directly off of that, making changes as I went. It was… more difficult than I thought it was going to be, honestly. And the story is… harder to write than I anticipated. But I’m working on it! Hamlet in Space! And my male!Ophelia character is a precious neurotic cinnamon roll, I love him šŸ™‚

What’s Coming Up in November

nanowrimo_2016_webbanner_participant

Obviously šŸ˜‰ My goal this year is to, not just write the 50k words, but to actually finish this novel. I already have it broken up into scenes (thanks, outline!) and it looks like I need to finish two scenes every three days in order to finish by the end of November. We’re only a couple days into NaNo, but so far it looks like I’m on track for that to happen. We’ll see how good I’m feeling in a few weeks…

Is it bad that I already have ideas for writing The Tempest in space? That’s bad, right? šŸ˜›

And since apparently this is becoming a tradition, the cute animal of the month!

  • Miles Walked This Month (September 27th-October 25th): 55.5 miles
  • Total Miles Walked:Ā Ā 573.5 miles
  • Milestones Reached: Warg Attack, the Eyrie

“All of a sudden they heard a howl away down hill, a long shuddering howl. It was answered by another away to the right and a good deal nearer to them; then by another not far away to the left. It was wolves howling at the moon, wolves gathering together!”

“Over them swooped the eagles; the dark rush of their beating wings smote them to the floor or drove them far away; their talons tore at goblin faces. Other birds flew to the tree-tops and seized the dwarves, who were scrambling up now as far as ever they dared to go.”

“Very soon Bilbo was laid down, trembling with fear, on a wide shelf of rock on the mountain-side. There was no path down on to it save by flying; and no path down off it except by jumping over a precipice.”

I’m slowly losing my lead, but that’s okay. As long as I stay steady, I should still make my goal this year, but I’ve got a lot of writing to do, so things are gonna slow down on the reading front.

Here’s the link to my star rating breakdown if anyone needs a refresher. It’s also up in the header šŸ™‚

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dude! This book was amazing! I loved the tie-ins to other works, I loved the Calla (I’m not joking, I keep catching myself trying to slip into Calla -speak ;P), I loved the story and the reveal of the Wolves. I predicted it, but there were enough twists to make even my prediction interesting šŸ™‚ I’ve already started Book 6, because I HAVE to know what’s happened to Susannah!

The Last Goodbye- Farewell to a Saga

If you are reading this, then it’s over. Changing History, the fanfiction saga that has encompassed my life for the past 15 years (off and on) is finally complete.

I must admit to mixed feelings. On the one hand, I’m very pleased with the results of my hard work. I’ve reached so many people over the years with this story, far more than I ever imagined I would, and I’ve learned so much about myself as a writer. And I feel like I’ve done the story justice, as if I’ve said the things I set out to say. I’m also very excited for the many other projects I have in the works, both fanfiction and original.

But I must also admit to a disconnected feeling. I sit down to the keyboard and my first thought is still “What do I need to do for Changing History?” Discovering that the answer is “Nothing” has been a strange sensation. I find myself asking if I’ll even know what to do with myself now, without Mel and Boromir urging me on. They have been a part of my life for so long, leaving them behind seems almost unimaginable. But I know that I must. I leave them in good hands, the capable hands of readers who love them and who will keep them alive. And while they will always be special to me,Ā  and I owe them so much, it is time for me to let them go, to release their hold on me and give myself to other things, other projects, other dreams.

So long, Calenhiril. Be at peace, Son of Gondor.

The Quarterly Writing Round Up!- Q3, 2016

Reminder:Ā  At the beginning of the year, I made some yearly goals and some quarterly goals, which I promised to reevaluate and re-prioritize every three months. It’s been six months now, and it’s time to look back at Quarter Three 2016! Here’s a recap of my goals for the year, in case you don’t want to go back and read the original post:

Overall goals for the year: Finish Changing History rewrites DONE! (Q1), Finish first draft of Changing History: Entwives DONE! (Q3), Write the Worth Living For short that I’ve been planning for ages, DONE! (Q3) Edit and begin posting Clarity DONE! (Q2), Finish the first draft of all three parts of Wonderland Reclaimed.

Reward Project: If I finish Wonderland Reclaimed, I can write my Avengers: Age of Ultron fic for NaNoWriMo in November.

I finished up two more of my goals for the year, bringing my total up to four out of five! The last goal regarding Wonderland Reclaimed I’m no longer worried about completing, and I’ve already moved my Age of Ultron fic, Good Intentions, to my tentative 2017 plan. So things are going very well this year!

Here’s the month by month breakdown!

Quarter Three, 2016- Review

July: Camp NaNoWriMo #2! Finishing WriMo including Calenhiril’s Search, Paradise Found (Worth Living For short), and Wonderland Reclaimed: Down The Rabbit Hole, 50k words cumulative. Possibly finish posting Clarity, but NaNo is the priority.

  • This was a HUGE month for me, and I’m proud to say I accomplished all of my goals, plus some! I picked up Double the Baggins, Twice the Took this month, along with my writing and I managed to post a couple of extra Calenhiril’s Search chapters. I really need to learn how to pace myself, because…

August: Finish posting Clarity (if not finished in July), Focus on the editing and posting of Calenhiril’s Search (at least one chapter posted a week, more as I finish them).

  • …this month was a disaster. I didn’t have to worry about Clarity at least, because I had finished that in July, but I lost all the momentum I had built up for NaNo and only posted one (two if you count Sept. 1st) chapters of Calenhiril’s Search. I did almost nothing else. I also managed to burn myself out for Wonderland Reclaimed. I don’t know when I’ll be able to look at that story again. I’m hoping early 2017, but not holding my breath.

September: Continue posting at least one chapter of Calenhiril’s Search a week, complete first edit of Paradise Found, add at least another 25k to Wonderland Reclaimed.

  • I feel better about this month, even though one of my goals was a complete non-starter. I had given up on Wonderland Reclaimed by this point, so I didn’t even try, but letting that go seemed to have the effect of freeing up my brain to post for Calenhiril’s Search, doubling my projected chapter count. I completed the edit of Paradise Found and posted the story too, which was a nice boost to the ego šŸ™‚

Quarter Four, 2016- Goals

Quarter Four is a short quarter, since I usually try not to set any specific goals for December to allow my brain to rest and try to cope with the depressing reality of the holiday season. For all that, here are my goals for Q4!

October: Finish Calenhiril’s Search, post one chapter of DBTT and write 5,000 new words, finish outlining my new NaNoWriMo project, The Stars Are Fire.

November: National Novel Writing Month! This year, my goal is not just to write 50,000 words, but to COMPLETELY finish the first draft of my novel.

December: My only goal this month is to post my requisite chapter of DBTT and to finalize my plans for 2017. I will likely try to pull out Wonderland Reclaimed again and see if anything has jostled loose, but I’m not setting any goals in that regard.

And that’s it! I feel pretty confident in what I have here, we’ll see how I feel once December rolls around. Until next time!

Once More Unto The (Writing) Breach- September 2016

Okay, this month wasn’t nearly as bad as last month. Plus, I’m starting a new project, so…

20160108-yayyy

What I’ve Accomplished This Month

septwordkeeper

See? Much better šŸ™‚ I even managed to write some new words! Not on the project I was meant to be writing for, but hey, new words!

i_tried

This went surprisingly well this month. So well in fact that I’ve moved up my completion date to… the end of this week. Oh god, I literally have only THREE CHAPTERS LEFT… There will be a dedicated blog post when I’m done, I have too many feels.

Three years after I finished posting Worth Living For, I finally have the Bora Bora sequel up! Hopefully it won’t take three years for me to write the full-length Age of Ultron sequel. I’m shooting for sometime in late 2017 šŸ˜‰

Once Changing History is finished (oh god…), this will be the next sprawling epic that receives my attention. Weekly posting probably won’t start until after the first of the year, and until then, I’ll be dedicating most of my new words to this fic. Not in November though. November is for my brand new project šŸ™‚

This is the story, all about how… wait, that’s not gonna work, let’s start again ;P

So, about two weeks ago, I was actually getting kind of depressed about NaNo. Wonderland Reclaimed held absolutely no appeal for me (you know that old saying about beating a dead horse? Yeah…) and I had resigned myself to the fact that I would be writing words on my DBTT fanfic for the month. It wasn’t ideal, but it made the most sense, productivity-wise.

Then I went to writing group. And was promptly (and rightly) shamed out of it.

I’ve been working on almost nothing but fanfiction all year. And that’s not to say that fanfiction is unworthy of my time. When I write a fanfiction, it is because I have a story to tell that I cannot imagine telling any other way. And I believe that those stories are important. They touch the lives of those that read them, and that is always a worthwhile pursuit.

All that to say, it’s still not going to pay the bills. Ever. I’ve been working so hard on my fanfiction this year because I want to finally be able to take a step back and breathe, to evaluate my time so that my fanfiction projects and my original work can exist in harmony together, side-by-side, neither one gaining complete control over my time. But getting to that point is turning out to be exhausting. My brain needs a break.

So, with the help of my group (I love you guys), I’ve decided to write a brand new novel for November. It’s a genderswapped, Hamlet in Space retelling, and I could not be more excited about it!

starsfirenano4

Special thanks go to Adan Ramie (who was instrumental in my shaming, mostly because she is probably SO SICK of hearing me talk about fanfiction ;P) and Cat Mealer (who was so excited about this idea I thought she might have an aneurysm, thanks for not dying at writing group, Cat! ;P).

What’s Coming Up in October

I’ve already mentioned that Calenhiril’s Search, the fourth and FINAL installment of Changing History will be completed sometime this week. I’m also planning to post my requisite one chapter of DBTT around the 15th. The rest of the month will be spent finishing my outline for The Stars Are Fire and writing new words on DBTT (I’m going to set an arbitrary goal of 5,000, because I like round numbers, but I don’t want to die ;P).

There will be a couple of extra blog posts this month too. It’s time for a Quarterly Round-Up (I almost forgot about this!) and as I said, Changing History will receive it’s own blog post in the next week or so.

I’m feeling really good about this month! Also, take a look at this bird!

It’s called a potoo, and they may look like Muppet characters, but I assure you, they are very real!
